Project Overview

Following the adoption of Law No. 2024-31 of September 2, 2024, granting Beninese nationality to Afro-descendants, the Republic of Benin welcomed Ms. Lauryn Hill in August 2025 as part of the promotion of the My Afro Origins program.

This visit was conceived as a symbolic homecoming, a moment of reconnection with the Motherland, ancestral memory, and shared history. Beyond the visit itself, the project combined cultural coordination and strategic media amplification, ensuring that this powerful moment resonated far beyond Benin’s borders through large-scale digital visibility.

Introduction

The My Afro Origins program marks a historic milestone in Benin’s relationship with Afro-descendant communities worldwide. By legally recognizing Afro-descendants as eligible for Beninese nationality, the country affirms a vision rooted in memory, justice, and long-term reconnection.

Welcoming Ms. Lauryn Hill, an iconic cultural figure whose artistic legacy is deeply connected to African and diasporic identity, gave this initiative a strong emotional and symbolic dimension. Her presence embodied the idea of homecoming, not as a symbolic gesture alone, but as a living narrative amplified through contemporary media channels.

The Mission
Design a Meaningful Homecoming and Amplify Its Reach

The mission was to design and coordinate a visit that honored memory, history, and spiritual reconnection, while simultaneously structuring a media amplification strategy capable of extending the impact of the experience worldwide.

This meant curating the journey itself and orchestrating its narrative diffusion, allowing the homecoming to be experienced both on the ground and across digital platforms through powerful, shareable storytelling.

Cultural and Memorial Journey

The visit included a return to Ouidah, a city of memory and spiritual resonance. Ms. Lauryn Hill walked the Route of the Enslaved, culminating at the Porte du Non-Retour, a deeply symbolic moment reflecting on displacement, loss, and reconnection.

The journey also included visits to emblematic sites in Cotonou, including the Esplanade de l’Amazone and the Mur du Port de Cotonou, highlighting national pride, contemporary artistic expression, and Benin’s evolving urban and cultural identity.

Together, these sites formed a coherent narrative linking memory, dignity, and modern expression.

Media Amplification and Communication Strategy 360

A dedicated media amplification strategy was coordinated to ensure strong visibility and organic reach across digital platforms. Content creation and dissemination were structured around authenticity, emotion, and storytelling, enabling the homecoming to resonate naturally with global audiences.

The visit generated viral content across social media platforms, resulting in several million cumulative views within a short period of time, driven by strong organic engagement. This amplification significantly increased awareness of the My Afro Origins program and reinforced Benin’s image as a land of memory, return, and belonging.

Results and Impact

The coordination of both the visit and its media amplification transformed the homecoming into a widely shared cultural moment. Millions of viewers engaged with the content online, contributing to increased international visibility and renewed interest in Benin among Afro-descendant communities.

Beyond digital metrics, the initiative strengthened the emotional credibility of the nationality law, demonstrating how public policy can be embodied through lived experience and amplified through contemporary storytelling.

A Homecoming Amplified into a Global Narrative

The coordination of Ms. Lauryn Hill’s visit illustrates how culture, policy, and media can converge to create moments of lasting impact. By combining a deeply symbolic journey with a structured amplification strategy, Benin successfully transformed a legal act into a powerful global narrative of reconnection.

This homecoming stands as a reference for engaging the African diaspora through authenticity, dignity, and meaningful visibility.
