Benin at Black Travel Summit

Project Overview
From November 13 to 16, 2025, the Republic of Benin participated in the Black Travel Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, one of the most influential global gatherings dedicated to Black travel, culture, and diaspora tourism.
Benin’s participation was conceived as a strategic operation to promote Destination Benin among Afro-descendant audiences, particularly in Brazil, a market of major historical, cultural, and emotional importance due to deep-rooted ties between Benin and its diaspora. The initiative positioned Benin as a land of memory, reconnection, and meaningful travel experiences.
Introduction
Brazil hosts one of the largest Afro-descendant populations in the world, sharing profound historical, cultural, and spiritual links with Benin. For Benin, engaging this audience is not only a tourism objective, but a broader act of cultural reconnection and historical continuity.
The Black Travel Summit represents a key international platform bringing together destination leaders, creators, entrepreneurs, and travel professionals committed to redefining Black travel narratives. Benin’s presence at the summit aligned fully with its ambition to position itself as a destination of return, memory, and belonging.
The Challenge
Reaching Diaspora Audiences with Authentic Narratives
Despite strong historical ties, many Afro-descendant travelers remain disconnected from contemporary African destinations due to distance, misinformation, or lack of representation in mainstream tourism narratives.
The challenge was therefore to present Benin not as an abstract origin, but as a living destination offering meaningful, emotional, and culturally grounded experiences. It was essential to speak with authenticity, respect, and depth, avoiding generic destination marketing.
The Mission
Position Benin as a Destination of Return and Reconnection
The mission was to coordinate Benin’s participation as a strong, coherent presence capable of engaging Afro-descendant audiences on issues of identity, memory, and travel.
This involved structuring a narrative that connects heritage tourism, cultural discovery, spirituality, and contemporary experiences, positioning Benin as a place where travel becomes a journey of reconnection rather than consumption.

Destination Narrative and Engagement
Benin’s participation focused on highlighting the country’s unique role in the shared history of the Atlantic world. Destination storytelling emphasized sites of memory, cultural traditions, Vodun heritage, and contemporary creative expressions that resonate deeply with Afro-descendant travelers.
Through discussions, presentations, and exchanges, Benin was presented as a destination offering immersive experiences rooted in history, spirituality, and human connection, aligned with the values promoted by the Black Travel Summit.
Communication Strategy 360
The participation was supported by a targeted communication strategy aimed at Afro-descendant audiences, creators, and travel professionals. Content and messaging were tailored to highlight Benin’s role as a land of origin and reconnection.
Digital storytelling, media engagement, and community-driven conversations allowed Benin’s presence to extend beyond the summit itself, reinforcing awareness and interest within diaspora travel networks.

Implementation
Coordinating a Strategic Diaspora-Focused Presence
The project involved the full coordination of Benin’s participation, including positioning, messaging, programming, and on-site engagement. Particular attention was given to coherence between destination narrative, cultural sensitivity, and audience expectations.
This coordination ensured that Benin’s presence was perceived as authentic, intentional, and aligned with the spirit of the summit.
Results and Impact
Benin’s participation at the Black Travel Summit strengthened its visibility among Afro-descendant travel communities and reinforced its positioning as a destination of memory, return, and cultural depth.
The presence facilitated meaningful exchanges, increased interest in Benin as a travel destination, and contributed to building long-term connections with diaspora-focused travel stakeholders.
A Strategic Platform for Diaspora Engagement
The participation of Benin at the Black Travel Summit in Rio de Janeiro illustrates the importance of diaspora-focused platforms in destination promotion. By engaging Afro-descendant audiences through history, culture, and lived experience, Benin affirmed its role as a key destination of reconnection.
This operation stands as a reference for promoting tourism not only as travel, but as a bridge between past, present, and shared identity.
